Battle of Milne Bay - WW2
Alotau saw some serious action during the WW2 Battle of Milne Bay between the Australian Allies and the Japanese army.
In August 1942, the Japanese forces arrived on the shores of Milne Bay with the strategic aim of building a naval and air force base as support for their plans for an overland invasion of Port Moresby. As they advanced, they were met with great resistance by the Allied forces on the ground. The Battle of Milne Bay is significant because it marked the first successful defeat of the Japanese forces by the Allies at that time. It was at that point that the war played out in favor of the Allies.
